Review: Garnier HerbaShine

I finally bit the bullet, stopped being a wimp, and coloured my hair! This was a big thing for me as it took years to grow out some dodgy colours I have used in the past.

One of many being the horrible incident involving a lot of bleach, the ‘cap of doom’ and a house hairdresser- you know the ones who randomly come to your house to cut your mum/nan’s hair because they’re probably not good enough to have their own salons? Well yes, I was a very ugly grey haired 14 year old because of that!

Back to the point…
I saw this product waay back at the Garnier event where I had originally chosen a light brown. Why? Who knows. So I decided that this colour wasn’t for me, and with it being Autumn and all, I opted for a nice bowny red colour- ice mahogany brown to be exact.

I don’t know why they rave about it only taking 10 minutes, if anything I think I would prefer it to take longer so I don’t have to rush like mad to apply it before it starts developing and I end up patchy!

Still, I donned the giant sized gloves provided (why are these always so rubbish?) and started applying the colour. I did get a tad freaked out when I was applying it and it was already looking so dark and red, but I persevered anyway.

After washing it out, staining the entire bathroom (sorry Dad!) and conditioning, I was actually very impressed!

You can't really see the red that much here, but it's better than it was before anyways!

The colour is exactly what I wanted, a rich brown with subtle hints of red. Another thing I have to point out is how soft and shiny my hair is now. I was really worried my hair would feel brittle or damaged but it looks and feels lovely, even if I do say so myself :)

I hope Garnier can make this into a permanent colour so I don’t have to keep dying it now that I have found a shade I really like!

Has anyone else tried these, what are your thoughts?

  3. Your hair looks sooo pretty! Love the color! I don't dye my hair though so I've never tried this. My hair is so dark that I doubt semi-permanent color would take!

  6. I havent use the herbashine but the other non permenant garnier dye that they have... cant remember what its called now!! But anyway, i much prefer the semi dyes now compared to permenant. You dont get roots as it all lightens and blends with your hair, so its far less noticeable and muh easier to change if it goes some what wrong plus less damaging!

I will def check this out next time though, loveing the shiiine!

  13. Is HerbaShine really a semi-permanent colour or is it actually a permanent colour? Is the colour still bright?
    Looks nice :)

  14. Your hair is gorgeous! I have dark brown hair and I also used HerbaShine, but in shade 426 - Plum. For the first few days my hair was a lovely colour with a great purple shine to it. But, it faded very soon into an almost red colour:( It's so annoying because it was a gorgeous colour the first few days! I'm going to be dying my hair again in a couple of days, and I really don't know whether to use HerbaShine again or not!

  15. Hi Liz- the colour is semi permanent, mine faded after a couple of weeks to a more reddy colour :( but it stayed bright and fairly glossy throughout I wish they had this in a permanent version!!

Shannen- Thanks! That plum was lovely I was very tempted by that one. Mine also faded to red which was quite annoying but I rolled with it :P
I think if you want to die it again and make it last longer, try those new L'oreal 10 ones maybe because they are permanent and fade to brown more than red. My friend used it and her hair is a gorgeous colour, I will be using that next!!
    Hope that helps! xx

  16. I tried the Ash Brown and I bymistake left it on longer than 10 mins..more like 20 and my hair is almost black :(
I have tried washing my hair with Clarifying shampoos,anti-dandruff..hot oil and the colour is not budging..i look like a goth kid...
it never really washes out the red does it? I used an ash tone but still has that yucky red tone.sigh

  18. does it look purpley in the light, because i was going to use this but i want a sort of purpley glow :)?

thanks, it looks lovely by the way :)!

  19. I, too, used the Light Ash Brown and it came out nearly-black. Shampooing and time are reducing the drama, but sadly, it's fading to a red (a color I've thought to avoid given the "ash" undertones promised).

  20. Hi ya,I used the Ice Mahogany Brown on sat & i did the roots first then the rest of my hair & left it on for 10 mins,I'd say before i dyed my hair, my hair colour was med brown on the ends & a mixture of grey & brown on the roots, anyway the result was very Dark brown on the ends & a red colour on the roots i do like the red colour on the roots but im just hoping the next time i wash it it'll blend in abit more, as a really like the red but was kinda hoping it would be like that all over, i dont know what it is with my hair but it always happens with my hair i was using l'oreal castings before swaping between med brown & light brown, med brown coming up dark brown & the same with the light brown! & it not really covering my roots! its annoying! i cant seem to find the colour i want all i want is a brown colour!, i must say i wanted a reddy colour this time around but was to scared to go all the way with a red, Im just hoping it blends in!,& tones down abit! xxx

  21. Hi , im dying my hair at the weekend and i want this colour ,,,, is it like dark brown but like with red bits aswell

  22. I also used the light ash brown and although it turned out a nice color, it's still too dark for my liking! Hopefully it fades quickly.. Maybe next time I should try dark blonde instead? I was hoping for more of a light to medium brown, not dark brown/black :)

  26. I just bought this in shade 400, dark natural brown since my hair is maturally black and i wanted to cover the greys as well as get a brown tint! i was wondering if you did an allergy test becaise it would be much more convenient if i could dye it today without waiting 48 hrs, but not sure if itll cause a reaction ): please reply soon! xx
